How does the Moral Compass come into this article? It is something that I have been thinking of for awhile. A sense if you will. On how does one know if they are on the right track? If too many Biblical teachers are teaching myriad of things, ideas, stout dogmas, unrelenting doctrines. If the world had fallen on its ear. If whole civilizations seem in an uproar, who, what is the Moral Compass?
For those who don’t know what a physical compass is, it is a hand-held device invented by man to show the way to north, east, south and west. It does not need a battery as it is powered by outside forces, namely Magnetic North. Even I am learning what Magnetic is during this writing and it is this, “The compass needle is attracted by magnetic force produced in the outer liquid part of the Earth’s core.” How fundamental, yet I didn’t realize that before!
So in a spiritual and moral sense who or what is our compass? Is it the Holy Bible? The Holy Spirit? People’s Opinions? Government Rules and Regulations? Television Programs? The Pubic Media? Is it The Messiah? Who or what is our compass?
The simplest is to follow a leader, and one full of personality that can hold your attention, and one that appeals to your intellect. Many go after this kind of leader for a Compass. Problem is, what if the leader is not following the Right Compass?
True Compass even needs an adjustment in Magnetic Variation to determine what True is! And this comes about with math. So is Math the True Compass? Some actually revere math. Some mathematicians can completely understand the universe thru math. They get a little romantic ideologies that is beyond the average person. Arithmetic is not the True Compass. However, it is an important factor in it.
What then is Magnetic Variations in the Moral Compass?
Simply this. Love. Life should be tempered with Agape’ Love.
Because love soothes the rough edges and makes honor situations that was wronged. Agape’ love overlooks the mistakes and flaws of an individual. Love triumphs in almost every circumstance. Where political correctness may scream attentions, Love speaks truth in grace.
So what and who is the True Compass?
Is it your feelings, senses, intuition? Is it experience? Experience can be a good thing, IF it is measured with the Magnetic Variations built into it. Otherwise, experience can become a falsehood even if you experienced the reality of it. Just because you have an experience with something or someone doesn’t mean it was a True experience. It could very darn well be Real but it wasn’t True in the sense of Right Moral, a Rightness.
Another Magnetic Variation is the motive. And love is the strongest motive that can move a person to do good, and become a better individual. This is another important factor in finding the True Compass in your life.
What of laws, rules, regulations, bylaws? Personal boundaries, civil responsibilities, family expectations? What of those? Could they be the True Compass? These are important things to form a civilization.
When one wants to mimic a celebrity, a wealthy person or even a good man or woman then you are desiring something akin to what that individual has obtained. This is human nature, to desire something of someone else but it usually rooted in selfishness, jealousy and worse entitlement. What is the solution to this malady?
Looking to God. Who is a Personal Being and therefore a Personal God who wants a Personal and loving relationship with you. He can fulfill much of your desires IF they are based on His holiness. This is the satisfying part of Life. To please God the Creator who designed you to become the image of His Character. Holiness is Love in Verb Action. To be holy, is to take action. To be holy like the Father in Heaven is His objection for each of his created human beings.
Incredibly, He sent an Image of Himself which is in the form of Jesus Christ. Here is the True Compass. The divine man to be your Moral Compass. Won’t you let Him show you the correct way? The way of Life, and Life eternal?
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. ~First Corinthians 13 New American Standard Version
I called upon the Lord in distress:
the Lord answered me, and set me in a large place.
6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear:
what can man do unto me? ~ Psalm 118
Church to help you:
And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:18-19 Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
Find a home church that lifts up the lifestyle of godliness, and sanctification thru the helps of brothers and sisters in Christ, thru the power of the Holy Spirit, thru the teaching of the Bible, and the admonition of The Church to live out its principles in reflecting God’s love and His image in your person, words and deeds.
Turn away, and reject teachings and ‘religious’ organizations that does not reflect Jesus Christ’s beatitudes. The Beatitudes should be reflected in a church’s attitude.
